Telegram is an instant messaging service which was initially released in August 2013. Although a significant number of people in the world are WhatsApp users, it still stands up as a major competitor to WhatsApp and other famous instant messaging applications.

So what makes Telegram so special? Let’s find out….

Telegram boasts of several awesome features which makes it stand out from the crowd. It emphasizes on security and speed. Here are some of the features which makes it a unique messenger:

  1. Open source

    • The complete application code is available freely and can be viewed and edited by anyone. Find the source code here.
    • Telegram has an open API and protocol.
  2. Secure

    • Given the encrypted protocols, it is secure than any other messenger out there.
      • Encryption: Obscuring information to make it unreadable without keys or passwords.
      • Protocol: Here it means following certain ways of communication.
    • Telegram uses two layers of secure encryption with 256-bit symmetric AES encryption, RSA 2048 encryption and Diffie–Hellman secure key exchange. Have a look at these links:

      2. Protocols – https://core.telegram.org/mtproto
  3. Secret chats

    • Another privacy respecting feature!
    • Establishes an end-to-end encrypted connection. Messages are self-destructed after set-amount of time.
    • So after the timer expires, there will be no trace of your messages.
    • Learn more : Secret Chats in Telegram.  (Advanced user article is here.)
  4. Cloud Based

    • All the messages are saved on cloud which enables the user to access them from multiple clients.
    • Currently, Telegram is available for Android, iPhone/iPad, Windows Phone, Mac OS X, PC/Linux and it also has a Web-version. (BTW, these were provided way before WhatsApp implemented it’s web version.)
  5. No data mining

    • Telegram is not owned by a company.
    • A lot can be done using the data on users’ devices and their contact information.
    • With Telegram, people don’t have to worry about their data falling in the wrong hands.

These features provided by Telegram definitely out-play any other messenger. The world is a dangerous place when it comes to protecting your identity and privacy online. Telegram can particularly be helpful in providing some security in those aspects.

So, would you be a part of this new era of messaging?
